Anyone looking for a successful model for logistics services should take a look at the cooperation between avitea Industrieservice and steel tube producer Benteler. The logistics experts from avitea Industrieservice have taken over all material movements of the steel tubes produced at Benteler's Paderborn sites as part of a contract for work. The overall concept of the joint solution also includes the dispatching of trucks and the execution of transport journeys between the halls within the plant premises and an external dispatch warehouse.
At its site in Paderborn, the family-owned company Benteler produces steel tubes that can vary in length from 20 centimeters to 26 meters. The goods are delivered to a variety of different customers. The quality tubes are used in various branches of industry, so that the loading must meet different requirements. Thus, they are loaded with special load carriers, in wooden crates, bundled tubes as long goods or also in wire mesh boxes, depending on the customer's specifications, in a very variable manner both in trucks, but also on wagons or in containers for overseas transports. In addition, the tubes sometimes have to be transported to other halls within the production process for various process steps. Due to the size and weight of the steel tubes, this highly specialized loading process requires a special level of occupational safety.
In order to meet the challenges of loading the steel pipes for Benteler, avitea Industrieservice developed a strategic overall concept and built up an experienced team. In total, avitea Industrieservice employs 50 to 60 people for Benteler - a team consisting of forklift and crane drivers as well as training and control personnel. In addition to forklifts and cranes, special equipment such as automated container fillers and mobile ramps are used to load the steel tubes.
Particular attention is paid to load securing. Due to their size and weight, the steel tubes represent a potential hazard if they are not loaded correctly. It is therefore important to provide intensive training for new employees and regular in-depth training for experienced employees. In this context, avitea's industrial service training personnel also train the employees themselves in the area of load securing and ensure that they have the necessary qualifications such as forklift and crane licenses. The team takes two to three months to train new employees.
The avitea Industrieservice logistics team ensures that around 280,000 tons of steel pipes are loaded each year at Benteler in Paderborn. For shuttles between the plants and the external warehouse as well as for internal material transports within the plant premises, avitea Industrieservice also uses its own semitrailers and transfer vehicles. In total, avitea Industrieservice thus moves xx tons of steel pipes per year.
The customized logistics solution also includes the control of the pick-up time windows, which are coordinated with the various forwarders. In this way, the control personnel always ensure that enough staff are on duty at the right loading points for the notified trucks, wagons or containers.
The joint solution: cost efficiency for a highly specialized logistics process
For Benteler, the cooperation with avitea Industrieservice offers numerous advantages. Especially due to the variable billing according to output quantities, the logistics costs adapt to the production volume. Benteler thus benefits from flexible and transparent billing, as personnel and equipment are deployed exactly as required. When output volumes are low, the number of personnel is also reduced, which has positive cost effects. Benteler can thus concentrate on its own core competencies, such as the production of steel tubes, development of new products and sales of steel tube production, while the demanding logistical activities are taken over by avitea Industrieservice.
Overall, the implementation of an individual solution, such as the one created between avitea Industrieservice and Benteler back in 2018, is a best practice in the logistics industry. It is explicitly geared to the customer's individual challenges and requirements and thus helps to increase efficiency and productivity while reducing costs.
