The power of algorithms: How AI is revolutionizing the logistics industry

Even in the age of Industry 4.0, the logistics sector is a key driver of the global economy. In addition to the smooth transportation of goods from one place to another, it also enables logistical processes within production facilities. In recent years, the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) has fundamentally changed the logistics landscape and produced innovative solutions that promote efficiency, accuracy and sustainability.

 

What exactly is artificial intelligence (AI)?

The first theories about artificial intelligence emerged in science in the middle of the 20th century. The first and best-known definition came from the British mathematician Alan Turing. With the help of the so-called Turing test, he developed the assumption that a computer can be described as intelligent as soon as a human being can no longer distinguish whether they are interacting with a computer or another human being. Artificial intelligence therefore refers to computer systems that are capable of solving tasks that would actually require human intelligence. These systems can learn, plan, solve problems and make their own decisions based on data and experience.

The term machine learning is often used in connection with artificial intelligence. Machine learning is a sub-discipline of artificial intelligence. It describes the approach of computer systems that can learn independently without being programmed. By using algorithms and statistical models, machines can evaluate data, make predictions and make independent decisions.

Use of computers and robotics in logistics

As early as the 1960s, companies began using computers for their logistics processes - for example to optimize routes and transport routes. While the first theories of artificial intelligence emerged in the middle of the 20th century, they were not practically applicable for many decades as there were simply no computers with sufficient computing power for their application.

With the advent of powerful computers in the 1980s and 1990s, the first approaches to AI systems became widespread, particularly in warehouse management and inventory planning. For example, some companies were already using automated warehouse management systems based on AI algorithms in the 1990s. These systems were able to monitor stock levels, track orders and generate alerts when stocks were low and reorders needed to be placed.

However, AI systems in the 20th century were still heavily dependent on being fed with the necessary data and patterns. Machine learning was not yet an issue due to the lack of computing power. Over the last two decades, however, AI technology in logistics has developed exponentially. With the advent of big data and advanced algorithms, companies are able to analyze huge amounts of data and derive precise predictions from it. Modern AI systems can solve complex problems in real time and make automated decisions, leading to an increase in efficiency and productivity.

Current application of AI in logistics

Today, there are a large number of AI applications in logistics. Artificial intelligence is used in particular in the areas of warehouse management, inventory management, predictive maintenance, supply chain visibility and process automation. For example, AI technologies are a helpful tool for the efficient route planning of delivery vehicles. By analyzing traffic patterns, delivery priorities and vehicle capacities, not only can delivery speed be improved, but fuel costs can also be reduced and CO2 emissions cut.

The integration of artificial intelligence has revolutionized the logistics industry and helped companies optimize their operations, reduce costs and increase customer satisfaction. Now that the computing power of computer systems has reached a level that enables the imitation of human intelligence and consciousness, a multitude of new possibilities are opening up. As AI technologies continue to evolve, more innovations and improvements in logistics will undoubtedly emerge, helping to drive the industry towards an even more efficient future.
